What to Wear for a Family Photoshoot | Family Photographer Bedfordshire

One of the most common questions I get asked as a family photographer in Bedfordshire is:

"What should we wear?"

The good news is that choosing outfits for your family photoshoot doesn't need to be stressful. In fact, my biggest piece of advice is to keep things simple and wear something that feels comfortable and true to you.

After all, the focus of your photographs should be on your family, not your outfits.

Start with Mum

Mums, I'm looking at you!

I always recommend choosing your outfit first and then building everyone else's around it. If you feel comfortable and confident, it will show in your photographs.

Choose something you love wearing and feel good in. Flowing dresses, knitwear, neutral tops, and comfortable layers all photograph beautifully outdoors.

Most importantly, don't buy something completely different to your usual style just for your photoshoot.

Coordinate, Don't Match

Gone are the days of everyone wearing identical white shirts and jeans.

Instead, aim for colours that complement one another and work beautifully with the season of your session.

For spring, I love:

  • Sage greens

  • Soft blues

  • Light neutral tones

For summer, consider:

  • Pale pinks

  • Soft yellows

  • Light creams

  • Warm neutrals

For autumn and winter, think:

  • Rust tones

  • Deep earthy colours

  • Warm knits and layers

Creams, beiges, and soft browns work beautifully all year round and can be mixed with any of the colour palettes above.

The aim is to create a look that feels coordinated rather than matching perfectly. By choosing colours that sit well together, your photographs will feel timeless and natural while allowing your family's personalities to shine through.

Don't Forget the Shoes!

Shoes are one of the most overlooked parts of outfit planning.

If we're heading into woodland locations or open fields, make sure everyone is comfortable walking and exploring.

New shoes and little legs aren't always the best combination!

Comfort is Key for Children

Children photograph best when they feel comfortable.

Choose clothing that allows them to move, run, climb, and play naturally.

If they're constantly pulling at an outfit or complaining about uncomfortable shoes, it can affect how relaxed they feel during the session.

What If I'm Not Sure?

Don't worry!

I'm always happy to help if you'd like a second opinion on outfit choices before your session.

The Most Important Thing to Wear

Confidence.

Your children won't look back at these photographs and remember what colour jumper you wore.

They'll remember how it felt to be cuddled, tickled, carried, and loved.

The best family photographs aren't about perfect outfits. They're about capturing your family exactly as you are in this season of life.

A Little Outfit Test

If you're still unsure what works well for family photographs, take a look through the gallery below of some previous outdoor sessions.

As you're scrolling through, ask yourself:

Which outfits catch your eye first?

If your eye is immediately drawn to a particular pattern, logo, or item of clothing before you notice the people in the photograph, that's often a good indication of what to avoid.

The goal is always for your eye to be drawn to the connection, expressions, and personalities within the image first. Your outfits should complement the photograph, not dominate it.

This doesn't mean you need to avoid all patterns entirely, but keeping them subtle and avoiding large logos, bright graphics, or multiple competing patterns will help create timeless photographs that keep the focus where it belongs on your family.
